デトロイト・タイガースに所属するタリク・スクーバルというピッチャーは、トミー・ジョン手術の影響でドラフトでの指名を断った苦しい経験を持ちながらも2024年の今季は飛躍的な活躍見せメジャー球界の中でも注目を浴びる存在となているピッチャーだ。
スクーバルは最高球速が100マイルに達する球威抜群のフォーシームを軸にチャンジアップやシンカー、スライダーやカーブをバランスよく投げ分け力と技と併せ持つタイガース期待の先発ピッチャー。
スクーバルは大学在学中の2016年にトミージョン手術を受け、翌年のMLBドラフトでは指名を断った経験があったが、メジャー3年目の2022年にも左ひじを手術し2023年の昨年はシーズンの中盤からメジャーに復帰するといったこれまで思い通りのパフォーマンスが存分にできなかったプレイヤーでもある。
メジャーに復帰した昨年の終盤から彼のギアは徐々に上がりシーズンの後半戦では圧巻のピッチングを披露すると、9月にはアメリカンリーグのピッチャーオブザマンス(月間MVP)を受賞した。
そしてスクーバルはこの勢いのまま2024年に突入することになった。
